Key Book Care Practices (Model & Teach These!):

  • Keep it Dry & Clean: Keep books away from drinks and food, this includes water bottles in book bags. Clean, dry hands prevent dirt transfer.
  • Safe Spot: Find a designated spot for books at home, away from pets, younger siblings, and sunlight.
  • Gentle Handling: Turn pages carefully. Use a thin bookmark instead of folding corners (dog-earing) or using paper clips/tape.
  • No Markings: Writing, drawing, or stickers are not allowed in library books.
  • Labels: Please do not remove the labels on the books – they are there for cataloging purposes.
  • Return on Time: Help your child remember due dates. Overdue books prevent them from checking out more.

Parent Responsibilities:

Financial Responsibility: Parents are responsible for the replacement cost of lost or severely damaged books, and your child will be limited to checking out from the Opportunity Shelf for one month if the book is damaged so that they can learn how to return and care for books properly.  Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions concerning this policy.

  • Discussion is Key: Talk about the books your child brings home. Ask questions to help them engage with the story.
