What is a School Counselor?

• A Virginia state certified, specially trained professional
• An educator who advocates for all students
• A coordinator
• A consultant
• A group leader
• A mediator
• A professional who helps teachers, parents and other adults to help students succeed
• A professional who helps children understand themselves and others

What does a School Counselor do?

• Develops a program based on the school needs
• Counsels with students individually and or in groups
• Provides systemic and developmental classroom guidance to all students
• Responds to student needs in crisis situations
• Orients students as they transition to school
• Works with student’s absentees
• Participates actively in the referral process of students to special programs and or services
• Analyzes test results to provide information about abilities, achievement, interest and needs
• Coordinates efforts with other school specialists
• Conducts conferences with parents
• Coordinates staff support

How do I get to see the school counselor?

• I can ask the counselor to meet with me.
• My parent/guardian can ask the counselor to talk with me.
• My teacher or principal can ask that I meet with the counselor.
• The counselor can invite me for a visit to the counselor’s office.

Why does my school have a school counselor?

The counselor is here to help students so that they can be confident and do their best in school.

The counselor wants all students to be able to learn and continue the desire to learn.
